Course Objectives:  Describe the gait cycle using contemporary models of gait (inverted pendulum and dynamic walking). Apply the principles and language of these models to describe key dynamic and biomechanical events during each stage of the gait cycle.  Describe the features of open and closed chain biomechanics. ¿ Explain the chain reaction leading to functional stability during gait  Define the mechanism, sequence and timing of muscle activation during the gait cycle . Define the role of the proprioceptive stretch reflex in activating muscle function.  Identify functional consequences of common neurological and musculoskeletal pathologies. identify connections between biomechanical disruptions and resulting gait deviations.  Recognize pathological gait profiles that occur as a consequence of diagnoses common in prosthetic and orthotic patient care. o Neurological impairments: CVA, TBI, CP, MS, CMT o Orthopedic impairments: OA, PTTD o Partial foot amputation  Collaborate with orthotic practitioners to establish goals for orthotic management of these conditions and deviations.  Predict the positive and negative impacts of various lower limb orthotic designs on pathological gait. Explain indications and contraindications to using specific orthotic designs. Describe the benefits of dynamic orthoses in mitigating or resolving specific pathological gait patterns.  Recognize the importance of key factors related to patient selection, AFO selection, and customization.  Select specific outcome measurement strategies.  Describe neuroplasticity and recommend therapy interventions to maximize function while wearing an orthotic device.  Integrate tri-planar lower limb joint biomechanics into gait training programs
