Abstract / Description:
A unique, fun and successful approach to fall prevention! This course provides in-depth instruction in the Six-Step Balance System™, a powerful yet simple, proven program, designed to help older adults prevent falls by practicing and repeating a series of movements and simple exercises regularly. It includes FUN activities like practicing: Stretching in Bed, “Jiggle, Wiggle and Wise” and the “Dancing with Your Pillow”. Course participants learn how to teach patients about the body’s natural ability to balance; increase self-confidence, leg strength, improve mobility and flexibility and reduce the fear of falling. The book “How to Prevent Falls: Better Balance, Independence and Energy in 6 Simple Steps” by Dr. Betty Perkins-Carpenter is provided to each participant and used as the course manual. The exercises and activities in the book are studied and practiced in the course. This is an intermediate course recommended for Occupational Therapists and Assistants.

Objective(s):
After completion of this course, the participant will learn: 1. To teach patients exercises and fun activities to increase their leg strength, improve mobility and reduce falls and the fear of falling; 2. To teach patients how to discover the body’s natural ability to balance; 3. To teach their patients how to ensure adherence to keep this training as on-going part of their lives by teaching them to use available resources; and 4. To provide fall prevention strategies for home safety.
