Continuing Education Guidelines

FOTA will sanction continuing education course and contact hours. To submit a course application:
FOTA Commitment to Continuing Education
FOTA is committed to providing appropriate and quality Occupational Therapy related continuing education opportunities for FOTA members and other allied health professionals. FOTA has a standing Program Committee consisting of Program Chair and 3 FOTA members appointed by the Executive Board. FOTA, through the Program Committee will try to ensure the quality of speakers and presentations.
- FOTA will attempt to offer continuing education opportunities at Forum meetings, online. Other continuing education opportunities will be offered as appropriate.
- FOTA will sanction speakers and presentations on an event-by-event basis.
- FOTA may solely sponsor or co-sponsor continuing education opportunities.
- FOTA will provide the necessary documentation of continuing education courses, as required by the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy Practice Act.
- FOTA will maintain records for 4 years of speakers/presentations, attendance rolls and course evaluations.
- FOTA will provide courtesy rosters of attendees, lists of speakers and presentation information to the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy Practice.
Continuing Education Sanctioning Guidelines
FOTA sanctions continuing education courses and contact hours directed at Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants.The sanctioning fee is $150.00 and will cover a period of one year after initial approval and notification from the Sanctioning Committee.
- FOTA Sanctioning is defined as FOTA approved and/or endorsed courses, intended for licensed Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants.
- FOTA approved sanctioned courses are approved by the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy. If you wish your course to be approved for health professionals outside of OT, the applicant is responsible for approvals through the appropriate board. Please consult with CE Broker for additional approval information.
- Refunds are available up to 90 days after submission, after 90 days refunds are subject to 15% processing fee.
FOTA Sanction Continuing Education process:
- Course must be relevant to the field of Occupational Therapy.
- Host Individual or Organization must complete the online application form from www.flota.org at least 60 days (no exceptions) in advance of the event.
- Host Individual or Organization must submit all required documents including: a resume or curriculum vita for each presenter, sample of course certificate, brief description of the course, objectives and agenda or schedule of the course with specific times to determine the amount of credits approved.
- Host Individual or Organization must agree to follow the FOTA Rules and Regulations. *
- Sanctioning Chair will send the approval notification to the Host Individual or Organization within 2-3 weeks of the completion of the application with required documents.
To submit an application complete the CE Sanctioning Form .
Additional Documents needed for the application:
- Course Presenter current CV/or Resume.
- Sample of Course Certificate that will be provided to attendees.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Board of Occupational Therapy Practice (Licensure Board) requires the speakers for the following license mandated courses to be certified by the BOTP: The Laws and Rules of Occupational Therapy and Prevention of Medical Errors |
After the Completion of the Course The Host Individual or Organization is responsible for:
- Providing certificates of participation to attendees and maintaining documentation for auditing purposes.
- Providing FOTA a roster of attendees and license numbers (excel document) which is required to finalize the process with CE Broker.
FOTA is responsible for:
- Publishing the approved course on the FOTA website on the Calendar of Events page.
- Publishing the approved course on CE Broker after approval from FOTA and the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy.
- Reporting CE credits for OTs/OTAs on CE Broker, upon course completion for a maximum of 10 courses. If you are offering more than 10 courses, your course attendees will be required to self-submit their credits to CE Broker or you can submit a new sanctioning form.

The Host Individual or Organization is responsible for:
- These guidelines should be followed upon issuing the course certificate to a participant.
- No certificate of continuing education contact hours will be awarded if
- Participants are more than 5 minutes late or leave 5 minutes early from courses that are 2 hours in duration or less.
- Participants are more than 15 minutes late or leave 15 minutes early from courses that are greater than 2 hours in duration.
- Participants do not complete and return a course evaluation form.
- Approved applicants will submit a roster of attendees within 15 days of the course completion to FOTA electronically.
Note: Partial award of continuing education contact hours may be granted for courses with multiple sessions with prior authorization.
It is the responsibility of each practitioner to ensure that continuing education course(s) meet(s) his/her needs and the standards of the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy Practice and other Boards.
