Course Speakers  Jennifer Maronie, OTD, OTR/L
Dr. Jena Maronie graduated from the University of Florida and began her OT career working in long term care, hospital, and home health settings. She joined Pinellas County Schools in 2000 and is a mentor and leader, supporting therapists in a variety of ways. Dr. Maronie has provided continuing education opportunities within Pinellas County Schools, Working with the Experts, Autism Summer Institute and Technical Assistance & Training System (TATS). Dr. Maronie is passionate about supporting change within schools and teaching educators how to better meet the needs of their students, especially those with exposure to stress and trauma.

Course Description:  All school based occupational therapists have encountered at least one child with a trauma history. In order to better be able to respond to their individual needs, this course provides explanations on how trauma impacts development in children, including timing and type. Intervention strategies will be provided that help to meet not only individual student needs but also the needs of our classrooms and school

Course Objectives: Identify and define what is considered traumaUnderstand various types of trauma, prevalence of trauma, and the impact over time and generationsUnderstand how trauma impacts the developing brain, including onset, frequency and durationIdentify specific sensory processing deficits traumatized children shareIdentify sensory strategies that promote engagement across various settings for children with trauma historiesUnderstand how to set up the school environment, including relationships, to promote student engagement
