Course Title: FOTA Government Affairs Dry Needling Update

Course Level: Intermediate: Experienced in Subject

Course Speakers & Credentials: Carlos Martoral OTD/JD, Sharon Rosenburg, OTR, CHT, Jennie Kitelinger OTR, CLT, CMTP-DN

Abstract: In a recent decision by the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy, the practice of Dry Needling was found to be NOT within the OT scope of practice. Their rationale for denying it is not being in our scope of practice. The stance of our national association states it is in our scope of practice. In this course we identify what dry needling is, current concerns limiting its application by OT's and the path forward.

Objectives:1. Understand what is dry needling.2. Recognize concerns limiting its practice in Florida.3. Identify the need and strategies for implementation in OT.

Speaker(s) Description: Sharon Rosenburg is a long time FOTA member and chair of the Government Affairs committee. She played an integral part in updating the OT Scope of Practice in 2022 and increasing Medicaid reimbursement for OT's in 2024. She is a CHT and is very invested in today's topic.Carlos Martoral has been a government affairs co-chair for the past 5 years and also played an important role in Scope of Practice legislation and Medicaid reimbursement. Along with a small group of volunteers, Carlos Martoral helped create the OT Interstate Compact needs assessment for Florida in 2022. Special Guest: Jennie Kitelinger, Occupational Therapist- Has been a therapist for 20 yrs, mainly practicing in WI. She started taking DN CEU’s in 2017 and completed her CMTP-DN in 2020 with Myopain Seminars. She recently moved to FL and is working between inpatient & outpatient settings. Knowing the value of the modality she would like to get dry needling in our scope of practice to be able to provide to her patients.
